My mom is a grandmother of six, and any day now another baby girl is on her way. Mom is not the typical 80-year-old Grandma who likes to knit, stitch, and crochet. She’s much younger than that, but still enjoys knitting. Each time one of my sister’s says she is pregnant, my mom starts knitting a baby blanket. She has her staple pattern that she uses for the majority of the blankets but once in a while she is going online to search for a free knitting patterns. There are all sorts of patterns out there, so with seven grandchildren she likes to switch it up a little bit. And seemingly there are various sorts of knitting stitches she had to learn in order to make these blankets. I for one haven’t a clue what stitch means what, but I’m hoping when the day comes she makes my baby a blanket too.

All the knitting that my mom does, which is often just baby blankets, (but recently I’ve asked her to make me two Mary Jane slippers), she does it with knitting needles. I have studied her from time to time do stitch one and loop round the other needle into the subsequent stitch. I asked her if she knew anything about finger knitting. She did not know much, but thought it was something to look into. Maybe a new craft would arise for her.

I haven’t asked her during the past, but when winter comes this year I am going to ask my mom if she can make me two mittens. Winter is always freezing for me and my fingers are the first things to realize it. I know there are a lot of free knitting patterns for mittens out there, but it’s just a matter of finding the right one. I really like the warm wool mittens because they keep my hands and fingers nice and toasty. I ponder if there are free knitting instructions for mittens. If there’s free knitting pattern then there needs to be free instructions, I would assume anyway. Either way, mittens are the way to go in the winter and with our funny weather, often they are good for the summer too.

Although I am still young and don’t know much about knitting, it is something I’d need to study free knitting patterns in the future. When my mom is no longer around I would need to resume her legacy in making baby blankets for my kids. One blanket I adore is the baby Afghan. It sort of looks like that waffle material which I adore; it’s so comfortable and comfortable so I’d imagine that is how a baby would feel wrapped up in it.

No matter what you’re knitting or who it’s for it is something special as you made it. Knit on!
