How to Knit: How to Knit a Scarf

When you first learn how to knit, one of the first pieces people commonly learn to make is a scarf. They are so easy since you can make them any width, any length, and all you need to know is one stitch. You can make a scarf match a favorite coat or sweater, or make your favorite student one in his or her school’s colors. It’s inexpensive, fast, and makes a great gift for men, women, and youngsters alike. It only takes a few simple steps to learn how to knit, how to knit a scarf.
Choosing the Yarn You’ll Need to Learn How to Knit a Scarf
There are so many different kinds of yarn on the market to choose from that you should be able to find something that suits your needs. All colors of solids, metallics, and even camouflage is available. For a scarf, you should choose a middle weight, sport-weight, or four-ply worsted yarn. It will take about six ounces of yarn and you’ll need size 8 knitting needles. The finished size of your scarf will be about six inches wide by five feet long. If you want to put fringe on the ends of the scarf, you will need extra yarn.
Simple Directions on How to Knit a Scarf
Start by casting on 24 stitches. Make a simple garter stitch until you’ve gone all the way across the row. Then start again. Keep repeating until your scarf is the length you want. Cast off your knitting and tie it off. If you want the ends plain, then you’re finished. Otherwise, get ready to add some fringe.
How to Knit a Scarf With Fringe
Find a sturdy piece of cardboard or a book that is about eight inches long. Wind the yard around the book longways about fifty to sixty times. Using scissors, cut through the yarn at one end of the book. Determine how many pieces of yarn you want to use for each section of fringe. The heavier you want the fringe, the more you should include.
Use a crochet hook to pull the fringe through the scarf from front to back through the stitch at the edge of the scarf. When you pull the loop of the fringe through the stitch, reach through the loop and pull the ends of the fringe through. Pull to tighten.
Space your fringe six stitches apart with one tassel at each end. Once all the fringe is on, even up the ends.
