Aran style

Where did Aran knitting originate and what exactly is it? Aran knitting is thought to have gotten it start in a group of three islands just off the west coast of Ireland name appropriately enough, the Aran Islands.

This style was originally made with undyed cream sheep’s wool and featured complex patterns with cables, twists and bobbles. Today, Aran styles are common but no longer confined to using undyed cream sheep’s wool. By using cables, twists, and bobbles in an unlimited array of colors, you can create an enormous range of interesting patterns that are uniquely yours.

Elements of Aran knitting

There are three main elements to this knit technique, the first of which is cables. Knit cables by crossing one group of stitches over or under another group. To use this technique use cable needles. A cable needle is used to hold the stitches on either the right or wrong side of the knitted fabric as you form the cables.

Another common element of Aran knitting is the twist. Twists are worked the same way as cables are but cable needles aren’t used. Many knitters find working twists very easy to do especially when knitting in the round.

Bobbles are an interesting way to add texture and is the third element of Aran knitting. There are several ways to create bobbles so simply find the technique that you like best and use it to create and add them to your knitting project.

With these three Aran knitting techniques, you can come up with an infinite number of ideas to add spark and interest to any knitting pattern that you want. Don’t be timid. Be adventurous and branch out with your knitting by trying this knitting technique.
