Making A Beautiful Crochet Quilt

For many years there have been theories as to the beginning of crocheting. Spain, China and most countries in the world in the 1800′s have been mentioned as its originator. Be that as it may, millions of people throughout the world enjoy this pastime. For many years crocheted items for babies were made, including quilts for cribs. In recent years the art of making a full sized crochet quilt has become popular.

Convent Sisters were famous for their crocheted lace and, even today, some of that made hundreds of years ago are on display. For the general population clothing for babies and Afghans were produced in practically every household.

People who do not particularly like to make quilts using material and a sewing machine have found that they can make beautiful quilts by crocheting. When placed on a bed the quilts stand out with their bright colors and complicated designs. It has been found that designs such as Dresden plate are lovely when done by crochet.

Crocheting is not difficult and is easy to learn. It provides a soothing moment when working the needle and the yarn. There are many advantages to a crocheted quilt. For one thing there is no filler to worry about and there is no danger or machine stitching becoming dislodged. In addition, it can be turned on the bed and be just as brilliant and beautiful as the other side.

In choosing the correct yarn, it is important that the correct kind be chosen. No one wants to do the work required to crochet a quilt and then have it not last very long because of a poor yarn choice. Worsted weight yarn seems to be the most popular type. It is important that instructions be kept regarding what needs to be done when it is necessary to clean the quilt so it is not ruined by incorrect cleaning.

Many of the quilts are simply crotched blocks that are then put together with a tapestry needle. This is simple when something like a Nine Patch Quilt is made. As with a handmade quilt, each block is put in a certain color pattern for the overall effect.

There is nothing more precious in a family than owning something that a long ago relative created with their own hands. Making a crochet quilt is one of these creations that will last for many, many years. It will be displayed as a family heirloom and enjoyed by all who view it.

As a kid; some of my fondest memories are when our family would gather around the television set in the evening. We all had our favorite shows but we still had time to be with each other. My mom and grandmother would sit together on the couch and they would be crocheting. Looking back; I remember sitting and watching them and thinking how great it was to be together as a family. I became very close to my grandmother during those years.

Times have changed and so have the ways that families spend their evenings. Our fast past lives seldom gives families the time to really enjoy each other. Most children have their own television in their own bedroom and many families spend the evenings in separate rooms.

While the modern conveniences and methods of communication have added a lot of value to our lives; they have also done a lot to separate us. Everybody has their own cell phones, game boys and separate televisions; families have a tendency to drift apart.

Recently, I had a pleasant experience when one of our granddaughters came to spend a week with us. One evening while we were visiting; grandma (my wife) was crocheting while carrying on the conversation. Our granddaughter became interested and wanted to learn how to crotchet.

The next day both the girls (grandma and granddaughter) went shopping for crocheting materials. They spent the rest of the week being together; when she was not helping grandma in the kitchen, they were laughing and giggling doing their crocheting. Yeah; they did not have much time for grandpa but it was fun watching them together. It took me back in memories to times long past but still part of my heart.

We were all sad to see the week come to an end because it meant that mom and dad were coming and our visit would be over. When she left; she thanked grandma for teaching her how to crotchet and she could hardly wait until she was able to come back for another visit. It is amazing how close grandma and our granddaughter became in such a short period of time.

Later I found that the art of crocheting is alive and well and there are many people that still do it. That knowledge warmed my heart because I know it means that there are still families that enjoy being together and spending their time as a family.

Why not learn to crochet and teach your kids to do it. It is a good way to spend time together and have fun. Visit us at http://www.jwhobbies/yarn.html for tips on crocheting.
